Rolling Ladder Caster Sizes | EGA Products, Inc.

Mobility is one of the biggest advantages of rolling ladders in warehouses, distribution centers, and production facilities. Casters allow workers to move ladders quickly between aisles, reach products efficiently, and reposition equipment without delays. But not all caster wheels are the same. The size and style of caster you choose has a direct effect on safety, rolling ladder OSHA compliance, and overall productivity.

At EGA Products, we design and manufacture rolling ladders built to meet the highest industrial standards. We also provide replacement caster kits made specifically for our ladders. Using the correct caster is essential, not only for performance but also for ensuring your ladder remains compliant and safe to use.

Why using the Correct Caster Size is Important

Rolling ladders may look simple, but casters are a critical part of their design. The wrong size or style of caster can:

  • Make the ladder harder to roll across warehouse floors
  • Reduce stability during use
  • Compromise OSHA compliance
  • Increase the risk of accidents and injuries

When workers climb a rolling ladder, the caster system also helps lock it in place. If casters are worn, undersized, installed incorrectly, or not matched to the ladder design, the ladder may not secure properly, creating a dangerous situation. That’s why it’s always recommended to use manufacturer approved casters designed for your exact ladder model. View EGA’s rolling ladder assortment.

2″ Caster Wheels

These caster wheels are outdated and for EGA ladders, stopped being used since 1995. They are discontinued but some ladder manufacturers still make rolling ladders with this smaller size.C2SS. 2 inch caster wheel for rolling ladders

3″ Caster Wheels

The most common caster found on EGA’s rolling ladders are 3-inch casters (part # C3SS). They are compact, durable, and well-suited for smooth warehouse floors.

EGA offers 3” replacement caster kits that include everything needed to restore a ladder’s mobility and safety, including springs, rubber tips, and mounting hardware. The standard 3″ caster wheels work best in environments where:

  • Floors are even and free of debris
  • Space is limited, and a smaller sized ladder is need (~6 steps or less)
  • Workers are frequently moving the ladder short distances

4″ Caster Wheels

4-inch casters are a step up in mobility and durability. With a larger diameter, these casters roll more smoothly across minor floor imperfections and can withstand heavier use. They are typically on larger rolling ladders or mobile work platforms. There are rigid fork and swivel casters for different ladder setups. The 4″ wheels are ideally for:

  • Warehouses with slightly uneven or textured floors
  • Heavier-duty rolling ladders carrying larger loads
  • Facilities where ladders are repositioned constantly throughout a shift

Swivel 4″ casters (part # C4SS) are paired with EGA’s EZY-Lock® system, while the rigid fork 4” casters (part # C4RF) provide a balance of easy mobility and secure, OSHA compliant stability once weight is applied to the ladder.

Larger Caster Wheels and Specialty Options

Some industrial applications require even bigger wheels, such as 10-inch wheels. These are generally used for specialized mobile platforms or outdoor environments where ladders must roll across rough surfaces. EGA’s semi-trailer access rolling ladder uses 10″ wheels (part # R10).

While not common in every warehouse, larger casters can make sense in:

  • Maintenance yards/trailer access
  • Facilities with uneven or damaged concrete
  • Outdoor applications where stability is critical

When considering oversized casters, it’s especially important to work with the ladder’s manufacturer. Changing caster size affects ladder height, balance, and safety locking mechanisms. Using non-approved casters can make a ladder non-compliant with OSHA standards and unsafe for workers.

Safety, OSHA Compliance, and Manufacturer Parts

OSHA regulations require that ladders used in industrial workplaces are designed, constructed, and maintained in a way that minimizes hazards. Follow all rolling ladder safety tips to maintain a safe workplace. Something as small as an incorrect caster can cause the ladder to perform outside of its intended design.

  • Wrong caster size: May prevent proper locking, leading to rolling during use.
  • Aftermarket casters: Often lack the correct load rating or mounting system.
  • Worn-out casters: Increase the risk of tipping or sliding.

That’s why purchasing replacement casters and parts directly from EGA Products is the only way to ensure your ladder remains safe and OSHA compliant. EGA casters are engineered for the specific ladder models we manufacture, maintaining both performance and safety standards.
